How to get the numbers
- Followers: from the profile. Rounded figures like 2.4K are fine.
- Average likes: add the likes on your last eight to ten posts and divide by the number of posts. Leave out a one-off post that went far wider than normal.
- Average comments: the same, ideally without your own replies.
- Saves and shares: only you can see these, in Insights. Leave the box empty for other accounts.
Or use the fill-in box above the form: type a public username and we fetch the follower count and the averages from its recent posts.
The formula
Engagement rate by followers = average interactions per post ÷ followers × 100. A Townsville gym with 2,400 followers averaging 85 likes and 6 comments scores 91 ÷ 2,400 × 100 = 3.79%.
Some tools divide by reach instead, which only the account owner can see. Reach-based rates come out higher. Neither is wrong; compare like with like.
Using it before a follower order
Put your current followers plus the package size into the followers box, keeping your likes and comments the same. That gym adding 1,000 followers would drop from 3.79% to 91 ÷ 3,400 × 100 = 2.68%. Bought followers don’t react, so the rate falls. A small likes package on recent posts, or simply strong new posts, keeps things in balance. Our guide on spotting fake followers explains why brands look at this number.
Compare with yourself
The most useful comparison is your own rate over time. Work it out on the first of each month from the same number of posts. Also compare formats: if carousels score double what single photos do, you know what to post more of.
