The best time to post on Instagram in Australia
There’s no single magic hour, but there is a sensible way to choose one, and Australia’s time zones change the answer more than most guides admit.
Start with weekday mornings (7–9am), lunchtime (12–1pm) and evenings (7–9pm) in your audience’s own time zone, then use Instagram Insights to see when your followers are actually online. If your audience is national, remember Perth is two hours behind Sydney in winter and three in summer.
Why most “best time” charts don’t fit Australia
Most published charts are built on US data and quoted in US Eastern time, or in UTC. Converted to Australia they land at odd hours, and even the Australian versions usually assume one time zone. Australia has three standard time zones, and in daylight saving it has five clock times running at once:
| Where | Standard time | Daylight saving (Oct–Apr) |
|---|---|---|
| NSW, ACT, Victoria, Tasmania | AEST, UTC+10 | AEDT, UTC+11 |
| Queensland | AEST, UTC+10 | No change, UTC+10 |
| South Australia | ACST, UTC+9:30 | ACDT, UTC+10:30 |
| Northern Territory | ACST, UTC+9:30 | No change, UTC+9:30 |
| Western Australia | AWST, UTC+8 | No change, UTC+8 |
Daylight saving runs from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April. During it, Brisbane is an hour behind Sydney, and Perth is three hours behind.
Sensible starting times
Without your own data, these windows reflect how most people use their phones on a working day. They’re a place to start, not a rule:
- 7–9am: the commute and the first scroll with coffee.
- 12–1pm: lunch breaks.
- 7–9pm: after dinner, often the biggest window of the day.
Weekends are less predictable: later mornings, and evenings that depend on the season and the footy.
Local audience or national?
A local business should post for its own city and ignore the rest. A Hobart café posts on Hobart time.
A national account has to choose. Most of Australia’s population lives on the east coast, so east-coast evening is usually the best compromise. 7pm in Sydney is 6pm in Brisbane during daylight saving, 6:30pm in Adelaide and 4pm in Perth, which is still the end of the work day there. If Western Australia matters to you, try a later slot (8:30 or 9pm Sydney time) and compare.
Our time zone post planner converts any posting time across every state, with daylight saving worked out for the date you pick.
Find your own best time
- Switch to a professional (creator or business) account if you haven’t; it’s free and unlocks Insights.
- Open Insights, then your audience (followers) section. Look for the chart of when your followers are most active, by day and by hour.
- Pick the two busiest windows and post in the hour before the peak, so the post is fresh when people arrive.
- Test for four weeks. Keep a simple note: post, time, reach after 24 hours. Then keep what worked.
The chart reflects your followers, not people who don’t follow you yet. If you’re trying to reach new people with reels, timing matters a little less, because reels keep being shown for days.
Timing matters less than the post
A good post at an average time beats an average post at the perfect time. Use timing to give strong posts a fair start, not as a fix for weak ones.
