How to spot fake followers in five minutes

What gives bought followers away, how brands check influencers, and how to look at your own account the way others will.

Short answer

Look at the ratios, not the count. Low engagement for the follower count, sudden jumps, followers with empty profiles and comments that don’t relate to the post are the main signs. Anyone can check them in a few minutes.

Five checks anyone can do

1. Engagement against followers

Average the likes and comments on the last eight to ten posts and divide by followers. A healthy small account often sits somewhere around 1 to 5% on Instagram; a 40,000-follower account averaging 60 likes is a red flag. Our engagement calculator does the sum.

2. The shape of growth

Third-party tools that track public follower counts show growth over time. Real growth wobbles upward. Bought growth often shows as a vertical step, sometimes followed by a slow slide as accounts are removed.

3. A sample of followers

Open the follower list and tap twenty at random. Signs of inauthentic accounts: no profile picture, no posts, a username that is a name plus a string of numbers, thousands of accounts followed and few followers.

4. The comments

Generic comments (“Nice pic 🔥”, “Great content!”) from unrelated accounts, often within seconds of posting, suggest comment pods or bots. Real comments mention the post.

5. Views against followers on TikTok

On TikTok, compare views across the grid with the follower count. 50,000 followers and videos stuck at 300 views doesn’t add up.

How brands check

Brands and agencies usually ask for screenshots of Insights (reach, audience location, age), look at engagement over recent posts, and increasingly use audit tools that estimate the share of suspicious followers. Australian brands working with creators also care about where the audience is: a creator pitching to a Brisbane café with an audience that is mostly overseas is not a good match, whatever the count.

Check your own account first

If you’re considering buying followers, run these checks on yourself before and after. The goal is a profile where nothing looks out of place: a count that grew at a believable pace, engagement that still looks normal, and posts worth reacting to. If you’re planning to work with brands, don’t buy at all; show them real numbers.

Removing fake followers

You can remove followers one at a time from your follower list on Instagram. Doing so improves your engagement rate and audience data. Mass-removal apps usually need your login, so avoid them.

FAQ

Common questions

What engagement rate suggests fake followers?
There’s no single cut-off, because it varies by niche and size. Very low engagement for a large account, under about 0.5%, is worth a closer look.
Can I see who bought followers?
Not with certainty. You can see the signs above, but no outside tool can prove where followers came from.
Should I remove bought followers?
If you’ll be showing your numbers to brands, yes. Do it manually rather than with an app that wants your password.
